What Is in the Free Princeton Offense PDF
The free PDF is pulled straight from the Princeton Offense playbook, pages 6 through 10. Each page has three court diagrams with the coaching notes underneath. Here is what you get.
- Princeton Offense Blueprint. The basic starting alignment, the strongside and weakside labels, and the player personnel chart that tells you which player fits each spot.
- Chin Dribble Weave Entry. How Chin starts, the pass across the top, the coaching point on when the cutter leaves the post, and what happens when the wing has no pass.
- Chin High. The same entry with a UCLA screen from the post, the weakside exchange, the backdoor for a layup, and the flare screen timing on the weakside.
- Strongside Entry. Keyed by a pass to the strongside wing instead of across the top. The UCLA cut to the rim, the post stepping out high, and the down screen and flare screen that put the post in two three-man games at once.
- Strongside Reads. The common read when the defender plays over the top of the flare screen, the post change in the Air Force version, and how the high school version keeps one post player so players learn only two spots.
The Starting Alignment, in Plain Words
Most coaches who search for a Princeton Offense PDF want the alignment first. The playbook is specific about it. The post starts on the ballside block. The two forwards start one step above the free throw line extended. The two guards start elbow extended, about three to four feet above the three point line. If your gym has volleyball lines, the playbook tells you to use those lines as the guard placement line.
The side the ball is on is the strongside. The other side is the weakside. The post always begins on the strongside. Every read in Chin flows from those two rules, so teach the alignment until players can set it without a coach pointing.
How Chin Starts
Chin begins with a dribble weave on the strongside between the 1 and the 3. The 3 takes the handoff and dribbles back to the guard position. The 3 and the 4 then pass across the top, and the 4 passes to the 2 on the wing. If the 2 has no passing options, the ball is dribbled back up to the guard spot and the 1 fills the guard spot to receive it. The offense resets instead of forcing a pass.
The coaching point that matters most on page 7 is timing: the 3 does not cut off the 5 until the ball is in the right hands. Early cuts kill the backdoor. That is the lesson the free PDF teaches, and it is the same lesson the Chin Set breakdown covers with video.
How to Use the PDF This Week
Print it. Put one page on the whiteboard per practice segment. Walk the alignment 5 on 0, then run the dribble weave entry at controlled speed both directions. Add guided defense before you go live: tell the defender to deny once and sag once, and make the offense pick the right answer. When players can name the defensive trigger behind each read, move to the next page.
If you want the practice-by-practice version of that progression, the 10-Practice Princeton Offense Install Plan is also a free PDF, and it downloads directly with no email. Pair it with the install plan article for the teaching notes.
